about

The early 1990’s were very interesting years for Malta. Following long years of political turmoil, the country started experiencing a more stable phase which encouraged a renewed economic revival.

This revival was partly also encouraged by the introduction of media pluralism which provided popular platforms from where businesses could promote and advertise themselves and grow further. The socio-economic well-being triggered a national interest towards securing closer ties with Europe, and Malta started seeing the prospect of joining the European Union as a very tangible and possible reality.

It was within this context that Ġorġ Vella, one of the Vella brothers of Express Trailers, like many other Maltese businessmen, felt encouraged to start looking at how he could diversify his personal business interests.

By that time, Express Trailers was already on its way to becoming a major force in the local transport and logistics sector, so Gorġ felt drawn towards reviving his other passion: property. This is how he started renting industrial properties and spaces to third party businesses.

Typical of the Vella Brothers, Ġorġ wanted to proceed gradually and with prudence. He started with one garage in Ħandaq, just outside Qormi but soon after he acquired another two garages in the same area, followed by more properties. In a few years, Ġorġ had built a modest estate.

An important turning point happened a few years ago when the company, now called GMF Estates, acquired 7,000 sqm of land adjacent to the existent property, cementing the company in the industrial property sector.

Today, GMF Estates, run by Ġorġ’s sons Mario and Franco (hence GMF) administers a whole estate of properties that includes office space, warehouses, open spaces as well as server spaces.
